How to plant your seeds!

Broad beans are fascinating plants which start as pretty flowers and turn into tasty, nutritious beans!

If your plant looks like the pictures above, you have grown broad beans. Broad beans are a member of the pea and bean family. They can grow up to one meter in height and form beautiful flowers, which are good for pollinators (animals which help transfer pollen from one plant to another to grow more flowers!), before the beans themselves grow. They’re easy to cook and packed with energy, so make sure to use them in many tasty meals!

  1. Fill a plant pot or an old container (such as a yogurt pot or anything bigger) with soil
  2. Make a small hole in the soil. It should be about as deep as your fingertip
  3. Place one seed in the hole and lightly cover it with soil. Make sure it is planted in a sunny spot
  4. Pour some water over the soil to make it moist (not too much though!)
  5. Regularly check the soil and make sure you water your seeds daily. The compost must feel moist and not soggy.
  6. When the seeds are around 3cm tall, remove one of the seedlings (this step is optional but helps to produce a single healthy plant)
  7. If your plants look wobbly, use twigs or stakes (like in the images above) to support your plants.
  8. In 2-3 months' time you'll be able to see your beans!
